Persian Medicine represents one of the most ancient forms of traditional medicine. It traces its roots to the teachings of renowned scholars such as Rhazes and Avicenna, who developed an elaborate medical system.
The lifestyle rules in Persian Medicine revolve around six core principles known as Setah Zaroriah, which are nutrition, environment, physical activity, sleeping patterns, emotions, and detoxification. These principles serve as the fundamental and guiding pillars of the Persian Medicine lifestyle. Recognizing one's temperament, encompassing both physical and mental characteristics, is believed to be essential for achieving optimal health and informing lifestyle choices.
Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. This technique has shown efficacy in managing pain, reducing anxiety, alleviating nausea, and providing as various other therapeutic benefits as verified by World Health Organization.
In 2007, Iran established the Persian Medicine program, which was subsequently elevated to a PhD program in 2008. Recognizing the importance and potential of traditional and complementary medicine, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education approved the establishment of the School of Traditional and Complementary Medicine at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2010. As part of this initiative, the Acupuncture program was launched in 2023.

Since the inception of these fields of study, many students, including general physicians, have been accepted annually into this school to pursue their PhD degrees. With the establishment of these programs, many talented individuals have successfully graduated from this faculty and become proficient specialists.
